Walter was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Mansfield, La., to Walter F. and Roberta Nealy McConnell. He moved to Fort Worth in 1951 and was a graduate of Amon Carter High School in Fort Worth. Walter worked at General Dynamics prior to joining the Fort Worth Fire Department in 1965. He retired from the Fort Worth Fire Department in 1996. Walter proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for six years. During all those years, he had a construction business with his sons. Walter enjoyed hunting and fishing. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, W.F. and Roberta McConnell; brother, Gordon McConnell, and two sons, Ted and Clay McConnell. Survivors: Walter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy; son, Leslie McConnell of Cottondale; daughter, Jill Saulter and husband, Wade, of Keller; sister, Sarah Luckie of Haltom City; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
